Zach Winkler, M.D.
Dr. Winkler is a specialist in both Anesthesia and Pain Medicine who recently joined Cahaba Pain and Spine Care in 2020. He attended the University of Tulsa and graduated with honors with a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry. It was his strong interest in biology and chemistry, combined with his collegiate experiences volunteering in underserved community clinics, which inspired him to pursue a life in medicine. Dr. Winkler attended medical school at the University of Colorado, where he worked on research related to critical illness and was awarded a merit scholarship for academic achievement. He subsequently completed a surgical internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, followed by an anesthesiology residency and pain medicine fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has served on multiple committees overseeing patient safety and resident education. He has aided in the development and advancement of a research study to improve postoperative pain and clinical outcomes for patients undergoing Gynecology-Oncology surgery.
Dr. Winkler works diligently to advance his education and abilities in his field. He has worked after-hours in the Birmingham VAMC Surgical ICU as well as served as a resident coordinator for UAB’s Critical Care Transport service. Improving the quality of care that our healthcare system delivers is a strong interest of Dr. Winkler’s. He holds a Master of Science in Health Administration and developed multiple patient-centered quality improvement projects during his time at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Winkler enjoys practicing pain medicine and it is his passion to support his patients as they regain independence from their pain and improve their quality of life. He prioritizes developing and delivering excellent, cost-effective, and timely treatment plans for his patients. Dr. Winkler has experience in the latest interventional and non-interventional methods to treat pain such as X-ray and ultrasound guided pain blocks, radiofrequency ablation, stem cell therapy, spinal cord stimulation, and multimodal medication management.
While originally a native of Colorado, Dr. Winkler fell in love with Birmingham’s people, culture, and outdoor pursuits. He looks forward to staying in the region and serving the patients of Alabama for many years to come. When not in the office, Dr. Winkler enjoys spending time with his wife and son, hiking, bicycling, traveling, and homebrewing.
