T. Wade Martin, M.D.
Dr. Martin believes a comprehensive approach to the management of pain leads to better outcomes and improved level of patient function. He is board certified in both Anesthesiology and Pain Management by the American Board of Anesthesiology and has been in private practice for over eight years. Dr. Martin identifies the source of a patient’s pain through appropriate testing and physical diagnosis, develops a comprehensive treatment plan, and engages the patient as a partner in therapy. His treatment plans may include physical therapy, medication management, psychological techniques, injection techniques, TENS units, bracing, non-opioid management, or referrals to appropriate specialists. Dr. Martin builds strong relationships with his patients, and his treatments often focus on the whole patient, including their social situation, goals, overall health and well-being. He considers it a privilege to get to know his patients and their families, and to improve their quality of life, during their treatment.
Dr. Martin graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, and completed his Anesthesiology residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. He received specialized chronic pain and interventional pain management training during his Pain Management fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. During his fellowship, Dr. Martin developed expertise in a variety of interventional pain therapies such as spinal cord stimulation and kyphoplasty. He is experienced and trained in numerous spinal injection techniques such as medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablation, epidural injections, selective nerve root blockade, discograms, sympathetic blockade as well as a range of head and neck procedures that include stellate ganglion block, trigeminal ganglion block, occipital nerve block, and pulsed radiofrequency ablation.
Dr. Martin treats all types of chronic, acute and cancer pain in his practice and has a particular interest in interventional treatment of spinal pain, low back and neck pain, post-laminectomy pain or failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), difficult to treat pain conditions including neuropathy, and ketamine infusions for pain and depression. He is a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, Spine Intervention Society, American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Regional Anesthesia, Alabama State Society of Anesthesiologists, Alabama Medical Association, and Jefferson County Medical Society. Dr. Martin believes the best physicians pursue lifetime learning, and he continues to stay abreast of treatment advancements through national Pain Medicine conferences, review of respected literature, and his patients, who teach him every day. Dr. Martin embraces emerging trends and advances in Pain Management, such as ketamine infusion therapy for CRPS and refractory depression, high frequency and high density neurostimulation / dorsal column stimulation, and dorsal root ganglion stimulation.
Dr. Martin’s interests outside of the office include cross-training, soccer, basketball, and travel and spending time with his family. He believes that outstanding pain care comes from a team approach and supportive environment.
