R. Brian Thoma, M.D.
Dr. Brian Thoma is double board-certified in Pain Medicine and Anesthesiology. He grew up in Peachtree City, Georgia where he was inspired to become a physician by the compassionate care he received as a young sports medicine patient. He went on to Georgia Tech for his undergraduate studies, graduating with highest honors in 2001. Four years later, he graduated from the Emory University School of Medicine where he served terms as class president and vice president.
Dr. Thoma completed his anesthesiology residency at UAB where he cared for a multitude of patients suffering from both acute and chronic pain. He was awarded the annual J. Antonio Aldrete, M.D. Award for Excellence in Pain Medicine for his residency class as well as the Outstanding Graduating Resident Award in 2009. During this time, he grew to understand the difficulties that pain patients have not only in finding compassionate care but also maintaining their functionality and quality of life. Currently, he is one of the few pain physicians in Alabama who offer stellate ganglion blocks, celiac plexus blocks, lumbar sympathetic blocks, and brachial plexus blocks. His interests include managing post-surgical low back pain as well as complex regional pain syndrome and the use of spinal cord stimulation in the treatment of these conditions. He is frequently asked to review medical charts and is sought for his medical opinion on legal cases.
Dr. Thoma strives to have a practice where patients and staff feel valued and are treated as people made in the image of God. Outside of work, he spends time with his wife and two children. He enjoys running, outdoor activities with family, and coaching soccer.
